Transcript of tips from this tutorial:

Select two colors and spray lightest to darkest in the general shape of a large planet.

In this tutorial I use primarily Rustoleum Painter's Touch Gloss. I will note when another brand/type is used.

We will be making mountains in the foreground so we will leave some of the planet area blank

Poster board with one glossy side makes an ideal surface to paint on. (see link in description). You can also use canvas!

Here I add some black as a neutral. This will add depth and shadow effects.

Add white to the opposite side as your shadows. This will add highlights and make the planet pop!

Use a sheet of magazine paper or a plastic bag to gently lay on your planet.

Peel it back to remove layers of paint and create the planet's texture.

Using Quick Dry Gloss Black (cheap stuff at Home Depot) start fading in your shadow with a light spray.

Using Quick Dry Gloss White, create some highlights with a light spray.

Place a round object such as a lid or a bowl over your planet. This is your planet stencil. A thin edge will yield better results.

Switching back to Rustoleum Gloss, spray the top 3/4 of the remaining poster board with black.

Here I use Rona (canadian hardware store) brand fluorescent gloss green. Rustoleum gloss can be used instead.

Add stars by spraying white onto your finger and flicking in onto your canvas. Be sure to flick excess paint off to the side first.

Remove your planet stencil to reveal your beautiful space scene coming to life.

To create mountains in the foreground, choose a contrasting color and spray in the shape of a mountain.

Cover this layer with black.

Add in some white. This will create a snowy effect for the mountains.

Use a bag or magazine paper to peel paint in the shape of the mountains.

Use a light spray of Quick Dry gloss black to add shadows to your mountains.

Create an additional layer of mountains. This time I layer two colors for more depth.

Cover with Rustoleum gloss black.

Use a bag or magazine paper to peel paint in the shape of the mountains.

Use the edge of a pallet knife to create highlights by scraping along ridge lines of your mountain.

Varying how hard you press will alter the thickness and effect of the lines.

Use a light spray of Quick Dry gloss black to add shadows to your mountains.

Cover your piece with
Rustoleum gloss clear.

Scrape in your signature using a pallet knife or pointed tool.
