Indian two-wheeler manufacturers beat back Chinese companies in Africa
In the face of strong opposition from Indian companies, as many as 200 Chinese two-wheeler manufacturers initially present on the continent are now down to 40.
Amid border stand-off between India and China in Ladakh and skirmishes in Sikkim, yet another struggle is currently underway but on a different continent for a different kind of domination.

As companies from the two nations joust for an increased market share of two-wheelers in Africa, it's the Indians companies who seem to be beating back their Chinese adversaries for now.

Homegrown two-wheeler companies Bajaj Auto and TVS Motors are gaining market share in Africa. Two-wheelers are called Boda Boda in Africa and are mainly used for commercial purposes to transport people and goods.

In the face of strong opposition from Indian two-wheeler manufacturers such as Bajaj and TVS, as many as 200 Chinese two-wheeler manufacturers initially present on the continent are now down to 40. They shared almost 90-95% of the marker ten years back and now Indian companies remarkably have almost 50% of the market.

Bajaj Auto is currently the dominant market player with a cumulative market share of almost 40% of the 2.4-2.7 million two-wheelers sold. The company sold almost a million vehicles on the continent in the fiscal ended March 2020. It saw a compounded annual growth of 30 percent in the last three years.

The company’s executive director Rakesh Sharma attributed the company’s success in the continent to its products, local assembly lines, quality assurance, distribution partners, dealers and service centres.

“The company has been able to compete and win in the continent riding on its product strengths, local assembly operations … quality assurance, network of distribution partners, dealers and service centres,” Sharma said.
“With a long-term focus, a huge effort has been put in training tens of thousands of mechanics and establishing customer engagement programmes, which is yielding results,” he was quoted in a report as saying.
TVS said Africa provided structural growth opportunity owing to the “rising demand for last-mile connectivity in rural and semi-urban areas” Bajaj Auto has nearly 10 assembly lines in Africa and over a dozen distributors. Its Boxer model is quite popular there which helped the company increase its market share from 25% five years earlier to 40% now.
