So Can the Overhead Press Help Your Handstand Push Up? The Handstand push up is a great calisthenics or bodyweight exercise that you can take even further to the freestanding handstand push up. What we will look at today is Can the Overhead Press Help Your Handstand Push Up and then your freestanding handstand if you want to go that way with it. The overhead press is a great exercise, working the shoulders traps and triceps and many more exercises especially if you do the standing overhead press. You can use dumbbells , kettlebells or the barbell, all are great tools to use. The added benefits of the kettlebells is the awkward shape which will work your stabilisers muscles harder and if done with one arm at the time is a great core exercise too.

The handstand push up is a hard exercises and because you are moving all of your bodyweight it can be a hard exercise to do and progress with, so many people will use the pike push up to assist in that but the overhead press or shoulder press is a great tool to help bridge the gap between the pike and handstand push up and help you to learn it and progress with it. The issue comes when you want to learn the freestanding handstand push up as you need specificity for it and the overhead press wont directly carry over to it, you need to work the freestanding handstand push up in a specific manner with lots of balance work.
