I recorded a 10 minute breakdown of one of my favorite pitchers to watch, Jordan Hicks, comparing his pre-surgery mechanics to a recent bullpen session that was posted online.
-
A number of mechanical inefficiencies jump out at me, starting with a load into the toe and quad on the rear leg. This begins a chain reaction of events through the rest of the throw, including
-
1. Loss of late and explosive pelvic rotation
2. Elbow climb
3. Linear follow through (back knee drive, forward torso flexion and linear arm follow through)
4. Poor lead leg stabilization (transverse plane)
-
Do I think he's doomed? No! I think he's a great athlete who is going to figure it out and still throw flames if and when he touches the mound this year.
-
But it does bring up an important point about mechanical compensations after a major (or minor) injury. If Hicks is struggling with his mechanics being just a hair "off" how many thousands of other young pitchers are running through far worse scenarios? We see subtle mechanical shifts and compensations all the time with return to throwing post injury, regardless of if it's with our high school, college or MLB guys.
-
The body is smarter than us, and it's going to find a way to accomplish the task even if certain tissues aren't prepared and it has to use a compensation to do so. Our job as coaches and athletes is to be aware of these subtle shifts and course-correct early enough that they don't solidify as the athlete's new normal once he returns to play.
-
These compensations becomes much more difficult to tame after thousands of poor repetitions versus catching it early.
-
For the record, I believe 99% of these issues will clean up for Jordan if he just works to keep that weight over the heel a tad longer in addition to throwing at full game intensity more regularly.
