Season-salvaging performances, women stake Semis claims in New Zealand I Corona Cero Post Show Day 4
The swell returned to Manu Bay and the world’s best didn’t let the opportunity spoil on a decisive day at the Corona Cero New Zealand Pro Presented by Bonsoy.
A World Title performance from Carissa Moore reminded the world’s best of her caliber and 2010 New Zealand winning form, posting a 17.06 heat total over 2023 World Champ Caroline Marks with a 16.04 total of her own. Reigning World Champ Yago Dora provided fireworks all his own, posting a 9.00, alongside goofy-footed dominance from Italo Ferriera, Cole Houshmand, Alyssa Spencer and Sawyer Lindblad with magnificent performances all their own. Plus, Bettylou Sakura Johnson’s backhand dominance added her name to the list of competitors getting their year back on track with Morgan Cibilic, Rio Waida, Spencer, Houshmand, and Moore.
Not to mention, the highly anticipated rematch of Brazil’s World Champions, Filipe Toledo and Gabriel Medina, delivered to expectations. Toledo’s 2+1 set up helped square the World Champ’s head-to-head bouts to five a piece with Toledo looking to dig in toward another World Title campaign.
With more swell on the way, but questionable winds, a possible Finals Day looms over Manu Bay. And it all begins with Toledo taking on Griffin Colapinto in the first Quarterfinals bout. Plus an all-Southern California clash that has plenty of QS competitive fire to it between Alyssa Spencer and Sawyer Lindblad in Semifinal, Heat 1.
Stay tuned for the next call at 9:30 a.m. NZST on WorldSurfLeague.com.
