Easy DIY Customized Toddler Dollhouse with Decoupage | MAKE

Learn how to update a simple toddler dollhouse with decoupage!

My daughter started to become interested in figurines and pretend play this year and we knew that a doll house would be a great gift for her this past Christmas. I looked for a doll house that was small and compact but also cute. I saw a few I liked, but none really stood out to me.

I found a really sweet little fold and go dollhouse from Melissa and Doug online. The perfect starter size for my toddler. The house was darling, but a little plain. The wooden surfaces were just begging for a little customization! So, that is what I did! I found a sweet, vintage-inspired, cotton floral fabric and covered the exterior of the doll house with it using decoupage. Once I got the hang of it, this craft project was not hard to do… it just took a bit of time.

In about six minutes, you can see what I worked on in the six WEEKS prior to Christmas. The effort was worth it in the end… I love the charming, vintage look it has now. Plus, most importantly, my daughter loves to play with the dollhouse and the little bunny figurines. Watch to see how I transformed this dollhouse and get my tips to make your own.

- Melissa & Doug Fold & Go Wooden Dollhouse (Rumor has it this dollhouse may be discontinued )

- Floral cotton fabric

- Craft paint (I used white, black and pink)

- Mod Podge Matte Formula

- Mod Podge Hard Coat Formula

- Brushes, various sizes

- Scissors

- Brayer & decoupage tool set

- Ruler

- Craft blade/knife

- Paper doily (to make the door mat)
MY TIPS FOR THIS PROJECT:

- Water down the decoupage

- Be liberal with the decoupage application, especially detailed areas.

- Ensure glue goes over the fabric edges.

- Do not trim any of the edges of the house until the glue dries.

- In hard to reach places, cut strips of fabric to fit around difficult areas.

- To blend overlapping lines, use a fabric with a small pattern repeat.

- Apply 4 thin coats of Mod Podge Hard Coat over the painted and fabric covered surfaces. (allowing adequate time to dry between) Once cured (four weeks), it will provide a durable finish that may even be toddler resistant. (So far, it is for us!)
