India is now emerging as a manufacturing hub for defence production but it will take time to become Defence Exporter ,,And this transformation step taken because of Government Defence policy scheme ,,In 2014 Government issued 217 Defence license to boost manufacturing in Defence and now the number increase 460 in last five years
In 2020 The Indian government introduced a new draft policy that sets to make $25 billion defense production target, including making $5 billion from exports,,in the aerospace and defence goods and services , by 2025,,Export business contributed US$ 1.00 billion to the total value in 2019,, Defence exports in India were estimated to be at US$ 2.0 billion in 2019-20. India’s defence import value stood at US$ 463 million for FY20 and is expected to be at US$ 469.5 million in FY21.
India is manufacturing TEJAS by HAL and INS Vikrant first Indigenous Aircraft Carrier 1 by Cochin Shipyard which is expected to be Commissioned in 2022
the government had approved the export of indigenously-developed surface-to-air Akash missile system and set up a panel to ensure faster approvals for acquisition proposals by various countries
India now developed many crucial weapons indigenously and are increasing it's quality and benchmark to international standards to export this system to other countries
Other countries like Armenia, Vietnam, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Myanmar etc interested in India as Defence Supplier because of low cost as compare to other countries and all Weapons are war tested on Pakistan
India , is currently engaged in developing , a military base on the Agalega Island , in Mauritius ,,And a naval base at Seychelles , Assumption Island , to boost its maritime presence.

“This development is a manifestation of , Modi’s 2016 vision , for the Indian Ocean , articulated as Security and Growth for All in the Region ,
According to the report , the new base that is coming up , in Mauritius will be “essential for facilitating , both air and surface maritime patrols , in the south west , Indian Ocean , and as an intelligence outpost.
Government Initiatives AND INDIGENOUS PRIVATE SECTOR
To encourage more participation from start ups and micro, small & medium enterprises in Defence Research AND Development ,in achieving the ‘self reliance ’ goal, the Defence Minister Mr. Rajnath Singh released a new version of ‘Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Procurement Manual 2020’
INDIGENOUS PRIVATE SECTOR
As the Indian government has come out with a blueprint for self-reliance in Defence procurement, Indian private sector is seeking a level playing field with some actionable measures for its active participation in fulfilling the twin objectives of self-reliance and export
Private sector players have lauded the government’s draft Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy (DPEPP) 2020 as a well-structured apex level policy document which is in-line with the ‘self relience ’ goal
The draft document has clearly-defined goals and high-level strategies for indigenous R aand D, production and exports in the Defence sector The share of the private sector has been steadily increasing with participation of more players
If India is to indeed realise its ambition of being a significant player in the global defence scene, it would require a massive modernisation of its public defence set-up, along with an infusion of capital and technological expertise from private companies
