On July 1, 2014, on the eve of Independence Day (aka Republic Day or Liberation Day), which is celebrated in Belarus on July 3 every year, Belarusian President Alyaksandr Lukashenka (Аляксандр Лукашэнка in Belarusian, also known as Alexander Lukashenko, Александр Лукашенко in Russian) gave a speech at an event billed as a "solemn meeting" dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Belarus from the Nazis in WW2 & celebrating the country's Independence Day. Part of his speech was delivered in Belarusian rather than his usual Russian. This is the second time that he has spoken Belarusian in public, and the first time he has done so since his first inauguration in 1994. To date, this is the last known time that he has spoken the language in public.
