Every day in India, thousands of people experience theft of funds from their bank accounts — and they don't even know how it happened. This is called an UPI E-Mandate Scam, and it is one of the fastest-growing frauds in 2026.

What Is a UPI E-Mandate?
An E-Mandate is a special UPI request that lets someone deduct money from your account automatically every month — just like an EMI or a subscription. Scammers are tricking people into approving these mandates by disguising them as a simple ₹20 charity donation. Once you approve it, they can silently deduct thousands of rupees from your account — every single month.

How to Check If You Have Any Active E-Mandates Right Now:
→ Open Google Pay, PhonePe, or Paytm
→ Go to Settings → UPI Mandates / Autopay
→ Cancel any mandate you don't recognise
→ Check your HDFC, SBI, or ICICI bank app for auto-debit instructions and delete unknown ones

✅ How to Stay Safe from UPI Scams:
→ Never pay strangers online — always try to use cash with unknown people
→ Before approving any UPI request, check if it says "Pay" or "Receive" — scammers send PAY requests disguised as donations
→ If you see the words "e-mandate", "recurring", "auto-debit" in a payment request — REJECT it immediately
→ Turn on transaction notifications in your bank app so you get alerts for every deduction
→ Never approve a UPI request just because someone is standing in front of you and pressuring you

Where to Report UPI Fraud in India:
→ Call 1930 (National Cyber Crime Helpline — free, 24/7)
→ File a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in
→ Report the mandate at npci.org.in/upi-complaint
→ Contact your bank immediately — if reported within 3 days, RBI rules say the bank must refund you

Maharashtra accounts for 25% of all UPI fraud cases in India, followed by Karnataka at 18% and Delhi-NCR at 15%. Fraud is no longer just in big cities — tier-2 cities like Jaipur and Lucknow are seeing rising cases but have weaker cyber infrastructure to handle them.

The RBI has now made it mandatory for banks to send a pre-debit notification at least 24 hours before any auto-debit transaction is processed — so if you suddenly get such a notification for something you don't recognise, block it immediately.
