2016 BMW X1 | CarGurus Test Drive Review
Our reviewer very much enjoyed driving the 2016 X1, despite the fact that it's the first BMW built on a front-wheel drive platform. The new car shares the MINI Cooper Clubman's platform, so its enjoyable driving dynamics shouldn’t be a huge surprise, and our reviewer calls the new X1 a proper luxury SUV, unlike the first generation which had a less-nice interior and looked more like a station wagon.
The 2016 X1 gets a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder also used in the 3 Series. That four puts out 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque in the X1, which was plenty to keep our reviewer entertained during his time with the car. He also enjoyed its electric power steering, despite having had bad experiences with it in other BMWs. Early versions of BMW’s iDrive system were frustrating, but the system’s now speedy and understandable, and its graphics are top notch.
The new X1 is bigger than the car it replaces, allowing it to offer more room and comfort for passengers as well as cargo. It’s not cheap, though, particularly given the fact that many common features are extra-cost options for BMW. The X1 is not the most cost-effective option in the compact SUV realm, but it does offer plenty of luxury in addition to a dynamite drive.

The 2016 X1 is a revolutionary car, since it's the first BMW to be based on a front-wheel-drive platform. Given how well it drives, you'd never know.
The march of Xs rolls on and cannot stop, especially when it comes to the little BMW X1. Redesigned for 2016, the X1 arrives right as compact luxury SUV sales are surging. That might be good for BMW, but is this second-generation X1 worth your attention, now that it’s based on the company’s Mini platform? Of course it is—to a point.
