How important is camera resolution? Do you NEED more megapixels?

How important is megapixel count in a modern digital camera? Do you NEED more megapixels? We all have compromises to consider and in the end have to make our own choices about the gear we buy and how it fits into our lives? Your needs and mine may be vastly different, but having a clear understanding of where our compromises lie is important in making the right decisions. I want you to be rational about your choices while still avoiding some of the pitfalls that I've fallen into over the 15 years or so since I started photography. Do you need to consider future proofing your gear or is ANY modern camera going to be good enough to fulfill your needs?
