"I've Never Told Anyone This." — Ronald Bell on His Father's 1967 California Execution | District 2
Ronald "Ronnie" Bell, candidate for Sacramento County Board of Supervisors District 2, breaks a 60-year silence about his father in this interview clip.
THE STORY
In April of 1967, Aaron Charles Mitchell — Bell's father — was executed by the State of California in the gas chamber at San Quentin State Prison. Ronald Bell was 13 years old at the time.
Mitchell had been convicted of the 1963 killing of Sacramento Police Officer Arnold Gamble during a tavern robbery. Officer Gamble was a husband, a father, and a public servant. His family lost him that day, and there is no honest version of this story that does not name that first.
Mitchell was the last person executed in California before the courts halted executions for the next 25 years (1967-1992). Governor Ronald Reagan declined clemency. Bell has carried this story privately for nearly six decades.
WHY NOW
Bell is running for Sacramento County Supervisor, District 2 — an office that helps oversee the county's $9 billion budget, the Sheriff's Department, public safety policy, and criminal justice spending priorities. He has chosen to share this story now because, in his words, the voters of District 2 deserve to know who is asking for their vote.
"The questions I think about — about public safety, about how we hold people accountable, about how families on both sides of the criminal justice system survive it — are not abstract to me. They are the questions of my life."
ABOUT RONALD BELL
Ronald "Ronnie" Bell is a longtime Sacramento resident, retired pastor, and UC Davis graduate. He is running for Sacramento County Supervisor, District 2 on a platform of affordable housing, neighborhood safety, and rebalancing how the county's budget serves working families across the district.
