ZHIYUN RIDER-3 THREE AXIS STABILIZING GIMBAL: Review by Cross Training Enduro Skills

ZhiYun Rider-M 3-Axis Stabilizing Gimbal review
Anyone who tries to shoot action video footage knows how much the camera bounces around, especially with helmet cam footage. After a few seconds this can get frustrating, and some viewers even experience motion sickness.

This is where a three axis gimbal like the ZhiYun Rider-M is extremely handy. Here we've mounted a gimbal to a chest mount and ridden the same track. Note how smooth the background footage is, while the bike bounces around. It still captures the action but in a much smoother way that still conveys the action in sports videos.

As the name implies, the ZhiYun Rider-M three axis gimbal moves through all three axes using small servo motors to keep the camera stabilised.

The same benefits apply with handheld filming with the ZhiYun Rider-M. It's very difficult to get smooth video when walking. But a gimbal absorbs all that unwanted movement for a much more professional look to your video. Camera movement becomes even worse when you are running, but again the three axis gimal smooths the video footage brilliantly.

The ZhiYun Rider-M is designed specifically for Gopro cameras, you simply slide it in then tighten two screws to secure the camera. Simply press the on button, and then the mode button to start using the gimbal. There are several modes for locking various axes or rotating the camera.

The ZhiYun Rider-M gimbal comes with spare batteries, a battery charger, a padded carry case, instructions and various connections to a computer or external monitor. You can also download an app for your smart phone to connect with the gimbal via bluetooth.

The Rider M model comes with this handheld stick but you can use various mounts to attach to your usual Gopro mounts.

The only issues to keep in mind is your Gopro is not within its case and would be exposed to moisture. Also, wind noise becomes an issue at about 30km/h so you would need a piece of foam taped over the top of the camera for good sound quality at speeds higher than that with the ZhiYun Rider-M.

For anyone chasing professional quality in their videos, the ZhiYun is a very cost-effective gimbal for Gopro cameras.

REVIEW DISCLAIMER
We are posting this ZhiYun Rider-M gimbal review for serious videographers only, who are aiming for the best video quality possible. For everyday filming, you'll be best off with using the 'Superview' setting on your Gopro to smooth out footage, as well as good camera technique. While we do feature the gimbal on a chest mount, we'll only be using the gimbal in this respect for short bits of footage - we believe that the risk of damaging the gimbal in a crash is too high to risk riding with it constantly. However, for excellent hand held filming this is a superb bit of equipment and hard to go past. As with all our reviews, we will also post long-term comments at the end of the vid once we've used the gimbal extensively in a variety of situations. Music: https://www.purple-planet.com
