UK's top civil servant stepping down after reports of tensions - BBC News

The UK's top civil servant, Sir Mark Sedwill, who advises Boris Johnson on national security matters, is stepping down.

He is leaving in September, in what's said to be a big shake-up of the Civil Service.

There have been reports of tensions between Sir Mark and the Prime Minister's chief adviser Dominic Cummings, about the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and plans to reform Whitehall.

The announcement comes ahead of a speech by the Prime Minister on Tuesday, where he's expected to set out how the government hopes to rebuild the UK economy after the coronavirus lockdown.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Political Correspondent Jessica Parker.
