The Real Final Boss of Doom II is the Guy Who Made it

Doom II came out in 1994 and players have been fighting the Icon of Sin as the final boss ever since. What most people don't know is that the giant demon face on the wall isn't actually what you're killing. The real target is hidden behind it in a room you can't reach or even see during normal gameplay. The only reason anyone ever found it is because people started using cheat codes to clip through walls and explore areas they weren't supposed to access. The audio that plays when the boss appears has also been a topic of discussion for decades. It sounds like generic demonic noise on the surface but players eventually figured out there was more to it than that. The story behind how it all ended up in the game in the first place is probably the best part — it wasn't even planned. The artists at id Software were known for messing with each other during development and Doom II was no exception. John Romero has talked about it in interviews over the years and the full story of how he discovered what his own team did is worth looking into. If you've played any Doom game and never knew about this, MAP30 is the level.
