Wildlife Photography - Using a Kayak for Loon Photography
Join me for an evening float as I photograph loons on a backcountry lake in Oneida County, Wisconsin. Take in the sights and consider how versatility and ecological thinking can result in unique photographic opportunities.
I haven't yet mastered the art of whisper-vlogging, but I figure this one is a pretty fair success! When on the water in a small, backcountry lake, it is pretty impressive how far sound travels and how much disturbance even a quiet voice will create!
To stay mobile and versatile, I am shooting with the Canon EF 400mm f5.6L lens mounted to a Canon 7D Mk1. It is ultra sharp, small, and easy to carry into the backcountry.
The Kayak is a Guide Series Elite 10.4.
My binocular harness is from Alps Outdoorz.
In many areas, it is considered wildlife harassment to approach loons any closer than 200 feet (70 meters). I have found that loons will often approach out of curiosity, so be patient and mindful of the birds' needs. While reading the behavior of the loons, be sure to look for wildlife landscape opportunities. Some of the best images of loons also reveal a fair amount about the beautiful places in which they live.
