"Polly" is an anti-rape song written by Kurt based on the actual story of kidnapping and raping that happened in Tacoma, Washington in 1987. The lyrics are written from the rapist's point of view, and his victim is a 14 years old girl abducted while coming back home from a rock show.

The song was written as early as at least 1988 and performed by Nirvana for the first time in summer 1989. The version that ended up on "Nevermind" was recorded in April 1990 at Smart Studio, the only one on the album not to be from April 1991 Sound Studio sessions.

"Polly" was the last song recorded at Smart Studio, late at night. Chad is still on drums here, even if there's not so much work for him. Kurt played cheap and barely working five-string guitar from a pawn-shop, didn't even bother to change the strings. His part and Krist's bass were recorded live. Then Kurt recorded lead and harmony vocals, and then Chad added the cymbal crashes.

As for the bassline, don't miss those higher G notes that appear in the chorus. Many covers miss it, but you can clearly hear the Gs in the isolated bass track from the original record. You can find that isolated bass on YouTube. Also, make sure to make those cool rests that create the vibe and the rhythm.
