What It's Like to Join the Mormon Church

Is it hard to become a Mormon? How much did your life change when you became a Mormon? Tamu from “Sistas in Zion,” our very own Kwaku, and his roommate Jimmy, talk about what it’s like to be a convert to the church, their struggles, and what keeps them in the church.

“I was young and I didn’t really know anything about Mormonism so, my conversion came because I recognized the spirit.” Tame goes on to explain that the church language and culture were difficult to get used to at first. Kwaku continues the conversation by pointing out that there are many controversial topics surrounding the church. He investigated the church while accepting that there would be opposition.

Joining the church may even be a difficult experience for close friends and family. Jimmy shares a personal about his family and how their relationship was strained because he joined. “It was not until my father passed that my mom grew to accept a little bit.” Was Jimmy’s sacrifice worth what he gained? How would you feel if you had to separate from your family to join the church?

Although “sacrifice brings forth the blessings of heaven” there are times that converts do not always have a perfect experience. Tamu explained “I think it’s almost idealistic to think that everybody is going to have this great experience and this great welcome in, because sometimes it’s not like that.” She reassures converts that if your conversation is founded in christ, and not on the people, that you will stay strong.
