Hello, learners!

In this lesson, we will learn what is an adverb phrase that is also known as an Adverbial phrase.

What is an adverb/adverbial phrase?

An adverb phrase is a phrase- a group of words without having the subject-verb combination- that works as an adverb in a sentence.

Like an adverb, an adverb phrase also modifies of verb and shows HOW, WHEN, WHY and WHEN an action takes place.

Examples:-

1. Monu teachers English (amazingly well).

Adverb of manner- HOW

2. He teaches English (at his place).

Adverb of place- WHERE

3. He teaches English (in the evening).

Adverb of time- WHEN

4. He teaches English (to help students).

Adverb of reason- WHY

More examples

Adverbs of manner

1. Megha eats (like a crazy person).
2. He speaks to everyone (in a peaceful manner).
Adverbs of place

3. Dora is working (in the kitchen).

4. I am throwing a party (at my house) tomorrow.
Adverbs of time
5. I play with kids (in my free time).

6. His car is parked (at the corner of the road).
Adverbs of reason
7. I want to earn a lot of money (to help people).
8. Do things (to make yourself happy).

Note: Infinitive phrases and prepositional phrases can also work as an adverb.

Examples 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 are preposition phrases working as an adverb phrase.

Examples 7 and 8 are infinitive phrase that are working as adverb phrases.
