Tye is working at his store late one night. He's about to close up shop and go home to his wife when a last-minute customer comes in. She's an alluring, attractive woman, and she seems to be after more than just getting her phone looked at.

Tye is tempted, but just as he begins to consider the possibilities, he receives a kind of intervention that will force him to look at his beliefs about commitment, marriage and what it means to be a good man and person.

Directed and written by Corey Emanuel Jr., this thoughtful and engrossing short drama is a metaphorical journey of one man as he faces a test of his commitment to his wife. Shot with an aspirational gleam in the cinematography that is encroached upon by seductive shadows at the margins, it visually reflects both the tempting atmosphere of the situation unfolding in the film's reality, as well as the internal headspace of a man looking into himself and his history to guide him on what to do next.

The structure of the narrative is self-contained in one location and one moment in time, but it's also essentially a series of visits from voices and figures in Tye's inner landscape. It's a device that's as timeless as "A Christmas Carol," but here it takes on a more modern, personal resonance. What's effective is how each character is rendered distinctive and nuanced, even within the short format, and their arrivals are handled seamlessly, each presence flowing from one to the other as Tye's thoughts and emotions oscillate.

Their dialogue with Tye ranges from anything from tough and blunt love to hard-earned wisdom, but what comes through is a sense of brotherly love, empathy and community. Collectively, the cast all offer excellent performances, with actor Derrick Brent II as the constant. As Tye, he's a man who wants to do the right thing but also struggles with feelings of pain, neglect and entitlement. But through it all, he's accompanied by a larger flow of wisdom and experience, which help him arrive at a difficult choice.

Viewers can debate if Tye's visitors are angels sent from above, a collective of ancestors guiding their descendent, a representation of one man's conscience and mind or perhaps all of the above. However you look at it, "I Do" uses its structure to offer an emotionally honest, complex, and authentic examination of what goes through someone's mind when faced with visceral temptation. In doing so, it also reflects what it truly means to be committed, and to make that choice, again and again, honoring it even when things are at their most fraught.
