60-70% of Russian occupiers die before reaching the front lines, according to a senior lieutenant in the Ukrainian Defense Forces with the call sign "Alex" who reported this on Telegram.

He noted that enemy assaults are currently extremely rare. He added that even the Russians' human resources are not limitless.

"If just six months ago the occupiers could afford to carry out regular assault operations, even then without armor, now this is an extreme rarity, unless one of their commanders comes up with an incredible plan," wrote "Alex." According to him, the Russians have abandoned constant assaults and instead opted for infiltration tactics. This involves penetrating as deeply as possible through the Ukrainian forward positions, which have not formed a continuous line on either side for several years now. The Ukrainian officer noted:

"This doesn't always work, since the enemy is unable to accumulate a sufficient number of personnel for more or less large-scale actions of this kind, since 60-70% of all Russians die before reaching or arriving at the line of contact."

He adds that, in a short period of time, the enemy will experience a more pronounced crisis in offensive potential. "Alex" believes that Russian warfare tactics are exhausting themselves, which is why the enemy is currently making virtually no progress and suffering very high losses, creating significant personnel problems—in other words, a critical shortage.

Six months ago Russian forces could still mount regular assaults — though armor was already rarely used in offensives by then. The transition to small-group tactics reflects the Russian army's inability to gather enough personnel even for limited pushes.

"The Russians chose the most covert and deepest possible entry through our forward positions, which haven't formed a continuous line on either side for some years now," the Ukrainian officer wrote.

The lack of continuous lines on either side is what Russia exploits as its main offensive method. The infiltration approach is not always effective for Russia, Alex's assessment suggests. Russia cannot accumulate enough personnel to consolidate any local gains that the surviving fraction of infiltrators might secure. The current Russian tactic is "gradually losing effectiveness," he noted, with advance rates minimal and the manpower deficit growing more visible. Ukrainian forces recently halted a Russian advance on the Dnipropetrovsk-Donetsk Oblasts boundary and regained ground in the area in recent months — a section where Alex's observations apply directly.

For the first time since Russia’s full-scale invasion started in 2022, the initiative appears to be shifting in Ukraine’s favor, according to analysts quoted by The Economist.

The Economist said Russian forces are facing mounting battlefield setbacks, rising losses, and increasingly effective Ukrainian strikes deep behind the front lines. Russia’s manpower losses are also mounting. Estimates suggest that Russia loses around 35,000 troops per month – a pace that exceeds recruitment capacity.

Total casualties since the 2022 invasion began are believed to approach 1.4 million killed and wounded based on Ukrainian estimations.

Another issue for Moscow is a worsening ratio of killed to wounded soldiers. Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have suggested that Russian forces may now be losing nearly two soldiers killed for every one wounded – a sharp deterioration from earlier in the war.
