The "Atlantis" of Texas: Concord, the Sunken City
What if I told you that there is a little Atlantis right here, in our very own state of Texas?
A town that once basked in the sunlight, but is now doomed to spend eternity in the cold, watery depths of oblivion?
In fact, there is.
At first glance, the Sam Rayburn Reservoir in eastern Texas just looks like a nice place to go hiking, boating, and fishing.
And that's true, it is.
But beneath the surface, this beautiful lake hides a centuries-old secret.
In the early 1800's, a Colonel T.L. Mott pitched a tent on a river bottom, and soon built a cabin for his family. Soon, this small settlement became a town, including a post office, church, school, and several cemeteries.
This town actually grew and flourished for several years.
However, in the late 1950's the Army Corps of Engineers began building a dam on the nearby Angelina River.
Their plan was to form a large reservoir to mitigate local flooding, and enhance property values.
The problem?
The proposed location for the future reservoir was located over a vast area that included the historic colonial town of Concord, Texas.
Concord's families fought the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for as long as they could, but to no avail.
In the end, they gave up and watched as the dam builders pulled down their log houses, destroyed their school, moved their church, and dug up the bodies of their ancestors in Concord Cemetery.
Today, most of Concord's former residents have done their best to move on with their lives.
But in many cases, they have left behind a part of who they were.
A part that now lies in dark, cold exile, far from the warm, friendly gaze of the sun, waiting for the chirping of the birds and the laughter of the children to maybe, just maybe, return someday.
