Dump Truck Pursuit Ends In Rollover Wreck (3/21/2002)
Occurred in Phoenix, Arizona on March 21, 2002.
Television crews rolled tape as a former jailbird by the name of Kenneth Ray Thomas takes off down the busy streets in a stolen 13-ton dump truck with police in hot pursuit. Thomas sped through Phoenix streets and freeways during rush hour traffic, hitting some vehicles and nearly colliding with others, often driving on the wrong side of the road. As the suspect approaches an intersection, a car gets caught in the crosshairs. The dump truck is hit broadside, taking out a traffic light, and rolls down the street. End of story right? Not yet.
As the dust settles, Thomas bails through the truck's broken windshield, armed with bolt cutters, and he is not alone. Phoenix citizen Doug Click was listing to reports of the chase over the radio while driving to work, and when the crash happens in front of him, adrenaline takes over. Click chases the suspect on foot with an aluminum bat and serves up some vigilante justice. Police officers soon arrived and took the dump truck thief into custody. Thomas, two adults, and four children in the second car were taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.
Kenneth Ray Thomas, who had a history of drug use and was even arrested three other times before, was charged with 13 counts of theft, endangerment, and aggravated assault. Later that year, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 16 and a half years in prison.
In April 2019, Kenneth Ray Thomas was released from prison after serving his sentence.
