Isaiah Berlin: Philosopher of Freedom, a 72-minute documentary film by American Academy alumna Judith G. Wechsler, completed in 2018, traces the intellectual development of a leading public intellectual in the context of his life and times, through archival film footage and recordings, as well as interviews with biographer Michael Ignatieff, principal editor Henry Hardy, and pianist and writer Alfred Brendel, among others. From Berlin’s early life in Riga to his family’s move to London, in 1921, up through his major contributions to the philosophy of freedom, studies of Russian thinkers, and his life-changing encounter with the great Russian poet Anna Akhmatova, Wechsler’s film traces Berlin’s personal and intellectual development through the dramatic lens of the twentieth century.
