Every Operating System Explained in Simple Terms!

The evolution of operating systems that shaped modern computing, from early mainframe batch processing to today’s mobile ecosystems.

In this video, we trace how software moved from rigid, non-interactive systems to fully graphical, mobile-first platforms that power billions of devices today.

We start with GM-NAA, the first batch processing system for IBM mainframes, where computers executed queued jobs without any real-time interaction. Then we move into Unix, which introduced portability, modular design, file hierarchies, and the foundation of modern software engineering. MS-DOS follows, becoming the backbone of the personal computer era and standardizing software across IBM-compatible machines, despite its strict single-tasking limitations.

Next, we explore Apple’s System 1, which brought graphical user interfaces to the mainstream with windows, icons, menus, and the mouse, completely changing how people interact with computers. Windows 95 then unified usability and stability for the mass market, adding the Start menu, taskbar, plug-and-play hardware support, and mainstream internet integration.

On the Apple side, Mac OS X redefined stability by rebuilding the system on a Unix-based core, introducing protected memory, modern multitasking, and a refined graphical interface. Finally, we move into the mobile era with iPhone OS 1, which introduced multi-touch interaction and reshaped smartphones into intuitive consumer devices, and Android 1.0, which brought open-source flexibility and accelerated global smartphone adoption.

This video covers operating systems history, computer evolution, software architecture, Unix systems, MS-DOS, Windows 95, Mac OS X, mobile operating systems, iOS, Android, graphical user interfaces, computing history, personal computers, mainframes, and modern digital ecosystems.
