Found in the Colorado Rockies.

Pegmatite is an intrusive igneous rock characterized by its exceptionally coarse-grained texture, with interlocking crystals typically exceeding 1 cm in size—some reaching over 10 meters in length. It forms during the final stages of magma crystallization, when the residual melt becomes enriched in water, volatiles (like boron, fluorine, chlorine), and rare elements such as lithium, beryllium, tantalum, niobium, and rare earth elements.
While most pegmatites have a granitic composition—dominated by quartz, feldspar, and mica—the term refers primarily to texture, not composition.
This means pegmatites can also resemble syenite, gabbro, or other plutonic rocks in chemistry.
Beryl is a beryllium aluminum cyclosilicate with the chemical formula Be₃Al₂(Si₆O₁₈). It is a hexagonal mineral known primarily for its gemstone varieties, and it serves as the primary ore of beryllium, a metal used in aerospace and electronics.
The color of beryl is due to trace impurities, giving rise to several prized gemstones:
Emerald: Deep green, colored by chromium or vanadium.
One of the most valuable gemstones.
Aquamarine: Blue to blue-green, colored by iron.
Morganite: Pink to peach, colored by manganese.
Heliodor: Yellow to golden yellow, also due to iron.
Goshenite: Colorless, considered the purest form of beryl.
Red Beryl (Bixbite): Extremely rare, intense red, found mainly in Utah.
