“Now, farmers are barely able to cultivate the land. They can’t do it any more if you (government) don’t defer their agricultural loans and cover their credit, otherwise they won’t be able to work. So, farmers’ demands are clear; it includes taking entire crop based on the going rate in the market, to use the rate of 600 (thousand dinars per ton of wheat) and cover their (financial) dues.”

STORYLINE:
Iraqi farmers from central and southern provinces gathered in Baghdad on Sunday to demand support from the government as they face financial pressures.

They chanted and held up signs while marching through the Iraqi capital, calling for increased government subsidies.

Wheat and barley farmers said the government should buy their crops at the going market rate to help them stay afloat.

The market price of a ton of wheat in Iraq sells for roughly $400-$465.

“Farmers are barely able to cultivate the land. They can’t do it any more if you (government) don’t defer their agricultural loans and cover their credit," said Sheikh Ahmad al-Hazaa, a farmer from Wasit province in eastern Iraq.

The farmers walked towards Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone, where the government offices are located but were stopped from entering by riot police.
