Colossal Biosciences, a biotech company pursuing de-extinction, announced it hatched 26 chicks in an artificial environment. The chicks, aged days to months, were born from a 3D‑printed lattice that mimics an eggshell. The company has previously engineered animals resembling extinct species, including woolly mammoth‑like mice and dire wolf‑style pups. CEO Ben Lamm says the artificial‑egg approach could one day scale to birds resembling extinct South Island giant moa. Independent scientists praised the feat but warned the system still lacks key egg components, and reviving extinct species remains unlikely. “It’s an artificial eggshell,” said evaluator Vincent Lynch, noting missing elements such as temporary nourishing organs and waste removal. To hatch the chicks, fertilized eggs were placed in the artificial vessel, incubated, and calcium was added while embryos were watched in real time. Experts say a larger eggshell and considerations are needed before any moa resurrection. Some advocate conservation of endangered species.
