The legend of La Llorona (Spanish for 'The Weeping Woman') is widespread throughout Mexico and the Southwestern United States. There are many versions of the tale, but essentially it is about a woman who drowned her children in a river to be with a lover, however, he rejects her and after realizing what she had done to her children she kills herself. And to this day, her spirit roams at night seeking her lost children crying out "Mis Hijos!" "My children!". Growing up parents warn their children to stay away from rivers and streams for fear that la llorona will take them away.
