11/24/1998 - World Trade Center Mall / Liberty Street / World Financial Center

I used to work at 1 World Financial Center (Dow Jones/ The Wall Street Journal), and my commute took me through the mall under the World Trade Center, then out to Liberty Street, then through the footbridge over West St. into 1 World Financial Center. I had just purchased a Sony MiniDV camera and was trying it out capturing some scenes from my commute from Brooklyn. The quality isn't great, as many of my MiniDV tapes from this time have blocky artifacts, and skip quite a bit.

You can see some shots of the World Trade center towers and the Marriott which were destroyed on 9/11. Our offices at 1 WFC were badly damaged on that day, and we had to relocate to our headquarters in South Brunswick, NJ for more than a year. Luckily, I was on vacation at the time with my wife on a cross-country trip to California, and on the morning of 9/11 we awoke to the horrifying news from New York after staying in a campground in Louisiana. I was terrified for my friends and colleagues in New York, and simply couldn't believe that it really had happened.

It's haunting for me to watch this footage of a place that doesn't exist anymore. Especially a place that I spent so much time in.
