Review & Install ~ Excel Propane Instant Hot Water Heater w/Magnetic Flow Switch Vent Free

Review:
I have been using an instant hot water heater in my RV for about 10 years now. In-Fact I have been using and Excel brand back from when they just hit the American market. I would not ever go back to just a standard RV water heater ever again. Let's face it, 6-10 gallons is just not quite enough for a good shower.

Excel has always been ahead of the pack in terms of innovation. The original water heater I had had a built in water turbine to generate it's own electricity. See my review of the old unit here:
https://youtu.be/srqpldS_H_0 They have not disappointed in the innovation department since then. The unit I review and install in the video has a magnetic flow switch, as compared to the rubber diaphragm actuated gas valves of the other units on the market. This magnetic flow switch allows the unit to be much more sensitive and turn on at a much lower flow rate. This allows you to get pretty much near boiling water at the sink for things like coffee, tea and soup. Witj the old model, and all of the other brands on the market, I would have to run my standard water heater in tandem with the instant hot water heater to get this kind of heat output. Their prices may be a little higher, but they build a better quality product with better features. This new unit is smaller and lighter than the old unit, but is more efficient and puts out hotter water.
Since making the video, I have stopped using my original RV hot water heater in tandem with the instant hot water heater. Mostly because it gets hotter and the added heat is not necessary. Also because it can be dangerous to have steam running through hoses and pipes that just aren't designed to handle more than 120PSI and boiling temperatures. I would highly recommend bypassing your original water heater, or setting up a one or the other diverter valve setup like I have. See my other videos for the 3 way valve setup I use.
You will need to make some adjustments to the way you think about hot water. Most Americans are used to large tank water heaters that delivery their full contents of piping hot water at whatever flow rate you desire. With ANY instant hot water heater, you, and everyone in the household, needs to understand that the temperature of the water is now mostly a result of how fast the water is flowing. If you want hotter water, just turn the cold down, then proceed to reduce the flow rate of the hot water until you get the desired temperature. Make sure you account for the time it takes for the water in the plumbing to get to your shower or bath, when determining flow rate. Once you get used to it, you can take a full bath or shower all day at whatever temperature you want. I use a low flow showerhead and can take a shower all day without having to reduce the flow with this thing set on max. In the winter months, when the outside water temp is lower, I may have to reduce the flow to achieve the desired heat, but it is still way hotter than my last vent-free instant hot water heater.
It has now been almost 6 months of daily RV living and use of this instant hot water heater. I can easily say, this thing is worth it's price every day of the week. The first long shower you take, you will be grateful for your purchase.
