Duchamp & Sons Takeover: Mapping The Studio
On 7 May 2022 youth collective Duchamp & Sons took over Whitechapel Gallery with ‘Mapping the Studio’, an immersive exploration into their experience and interpretations of the studio.
Visitors were invited into the studio space of the collective, to put on costumes as they entered, and to embark on a journey of mapping the space around them through drawing, or to construct beautiful, if inedible meals to add to a community dining table.
Duchamp & Sons also created pop up installations across the galleries, including within the recent exhibition, The Living Studio. Here the group collected journeys from gallery visitors, adding each to a global map, and invited people to create a series of sculptures inspired by some of the group’s favourite artists.
Visitors were given access to an audible ‘Tourdio’ guide with which to walk through A Century of the Artist’s Studio: 1920 – 2020, voiced by members of Duchamp & Sons. Discussions ranged from the meaning and merits of studio spaces and art for young people today, as well as the effects of capitalism and… giant sharks.
The Mapping the Studio takeover was the culmination of a four-month long collaboration between Duchamp & Sons, artist Shepherd Manyika and guest artist Ben Connors.
