Floating Sandbox/Sinking of Tamatsu Maru (9th Deadliest Maritime Disaster)

August 19, 2023 marks exactly 79 years since the Japanese landing craft depot ship Tamatsu Maru was torpedoed twice and sunk by the American submarine USS Spadefish during a strong storm.

Tamatsu Maru capsized to port and sank in only seven minutes.

Out of the approximate 4,820 people onboard, there were only 65 survivors, making the sinking of Tamatsu Maru the 9th deadliest maritime disaster in history.

RIP to all those who went down with Tamatsu Maru on August 19, 1944.
