Salvation and Heaven | Basic Mormonism #3

Mormonism teaches that everyone goes to some level of heaven. This contradicts the biblical teaching on the eternal destiny of those who reject Jesus Christ.

Mormonism teaches that almost everyone makes it to some level of heaven. One Mormon leader calls this “the universal gift of salvation.” But only the worthiest Mormons gain the highest level of heaven and go on to become gods and goddesses of their own planets. This requires good works on top of God’s grace.
Salvation in the Bible is by Grace Alone

Christianity offers salvation as a free gift through God’s grace alone. Salvation in biblical Christianity is not primarily a matter of human obedience, but of God’s grace. We do not come to God by “cleaning ourselves up” or doing “good works.” The Bible says that God reached out to us while we were his disobedient enemies:

Romans 5:8, 10 But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners… For since our friendship with God was restored by the death of his Son while we were still his enemies, we will certainly be saved through the life of his Son.
It even says that God reached out to us while we were spiritually dead:
Colossians 2:13: You were dead because of your sins and because your sinful nature was not yet cut away. Then God made you alive with Christ, for he forgave all our sins.
And that salvation is a free gift for those who trust Jesus Christ:
Ephesians 2:8-9: God saved you by his grace when you believed. And you can’t take credit for this; it is a gift from God. Salvation is not a reward for the good things we have done, so none of us can boast about it.
Salvation is not a matter of “cleaning ourselves up” or “repaying God” or even living for God. It is firstly a matter of spiritually dead people being made spiritually alive, and no dead person can raise themselves up. Only God can raise the dead. It is not until after we have already been “made alive with Christ” (saved!) that we can truly live to honor him as he continually makes us more and more like Jesus.
The Meaning of Salvation
While salvation in Mormonism refers to being made into a god by practicing obedience and faithfulness, salvation in historic, biblical Christianity refers to two main things.
When we are saved by putting our faith in Jesus Christ as our personal savior and Lord who fully paid the price for our sinfulness, God begins the process of making us into who he truly desires us to be and who we will perfectly be when we are in his presence.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.
The second part of salvation in biblical Christianity refers to eternity. If Jesus does not return before we die, we pass away. We then face judgment (Hebrews 9:27). If we did not fully put our faith into Jesus Christ as our savior and Lord in this life, we are sent away from God’s presence (Matthew 7:21-23). For those who were made holy by Jesus’ blood through faith, we enter God’s heavenly kingdom. Here, we are fully satisfied with him (Revelation 21-22). We do not become gods, but instead remain with him for all eternity worshiping him and fellowshipping with other believers - for these are the reasons we were created in the first place!
