Charter Act 1813
The trade monopoly of the East India Company in India was abolished, except for trade in tea and with China.
Christian missionaries were allowed to enter India and spread education.
A provision of 1 lakh rupees per year was made for Indian education.
The rule of the East India Company was extended for another 20 years.
Charter Act 1833
The Governor-General of Bengal was made the “Governor-General of India.”
Lord William Bentinck became the first Governor-General of India.
The commercial activities of the East India Company were completely abolished.
The power to make laws in India was centralized under the central government.
Indians were promised government jobs based on merit.
Charter Act 1853
The rule of the East India Company was extended, but no fixed time limit was given.
Legislative and executive functions of the Governor-General’s Council were separated.
A competitive examination system for civil services recruitment was introduced.
It is considered an important Act for administrative reforms in India.
