As kids spend more time online, Santa Rosa County School District is partnering with Smart Social to provide parents guidance on online safety. Melissa Aha, a parent of a seventh grader who attended the last two sessions, says support is needed because parents and kids often have different perspectives on technology. The next session will focus on gaming and apps such as Roblox, warning that children using headphones at home may be interacting with strangers who can teach them harmful things. Experts say online interactions can escalate quickly and that strangers can manipulate kids into sharing information. Families are encouraged to watch the free live online events together, and Aha says doing so opened important communication between her and her child. Sessions will continue throughout the year on a range of online safety topics.
