Your child just told you they are gay. You love them. You are shocked. You have no idea what to say. Here is where you start.

1. The first thing you do is go and hug your child because they have died a thousand deaths inside before coming to you and rehearsed this conversation so many times that the fear of losing you has been living in their chest for years and the hug tells them before any words can that they have not lost you

2. Do not say anything permanent in the first moment because you are going to feel shock guilt anger confusion and the impulse to say something that fixes it immediately and none of those feelings should be the first words out of your mouth because what is said in that moment cannot be unsaid

3. Then say I do not know anything about this yet but I want to understand because that sentence is the most important thing a parent can offer and it costs nothing and it keeps the door open and a door that stays open is the difference between a child who has a family and a child who has to build their life entirely alone

4. Remember that your child did not choose to be gay the same way they did not choose their eye colour and the shame you feel about what the neighbours will think is your work to do not theirs because they have already done the hardest work which was telling you the truth about themselves when they had every reason to keep hiding

5. You also have a coming out to do because being the mother or father of a gay child in India means carrying a secret from your own parents your relatives your neighbours and that hiding has a cost and the freedom that comes when you stop hiding your child's truth is as real as anything your child felt the first time they walked into a room where they were allowed to be themselves

Your child did not come out to hurt you. They came out because you were the person they trusted most in the world. That trust is the gift. Do not waste it.
