The classic JS2 was a road sports car, which received different Maserati engines, like the one used on the Citroën SM, delivering 170 hp, the one found on the Maserati Merak (195 hp), and even the Maserati Merak SS engine will be used on a few JS2 (220 hp).
At Le Mans 1973, three Ligier JS2 Maserati were registered, but only one of them finished the race (Claude Laurent, Martial Delalande and Jacques Marché finished P19 overall).
In 1974, two Ligier Maserati entered the race, but only one of them finished (Jacques Laffite and Alain Serpaggi finished P8 overall).
Driven by Jean-Louis Lafosse and Guy Chasseuil, this Ligier JS2 powered by a Cosworth F1 engine finished P2 overall at Le Mans in 1975.
