How to be a Clockmaker / Klokkenmaker #01

TVGreen's Time Machine presents "The Clockmaker" from the series "Claim to Fame"

In the 15th and 16th century, clocks were mainly found in the country houses and palaces of the rich. That is where the clocks were in their proper place, and people had the money to express these forms of art. To understand the craftmanship of those days, contemporary clockmakers have to know their classics.
Mentink and Roest. Dutch clockmakers who know their trade.
Here clockmaking involves more than just repair.

With Mentink and Roest, or on more personal terms, Bert and Theo, restoration is the major challenge.
They know all about the years, the mechanisms, and the styles.
The art actually starts with history. A Louis Quinze clock looks different from a Dutch Zaandam clock. And the English style has characteristics different to the Swiss or Italian styles. On the basis of styles, choice of material and technique, it is possible to accurately define the period in which a clock was made.
