In 1853, Schumann had the idea to compose, with the help of his pupil Albert Dietrich (1829-1908) and the twenty-year old Brahms, a violin sonata as a gift for their friend, Joseph Joachim. This work was called the F. A. E. sonata: indeed, Joseph Joachim's motto being "Frei aber einsam" (free but lonely), the three composers decided to use the notes representing these letters.
Schumann only wrote the 2nd and 4th movements (october 1853), but some weeks later, he composed two new movements in order to build his own violin sonata. This sonata (Schumann's 3rd violin sonata) was performed privately in 1853 and 1854; yet, it was not printed and performed in public until 1956.
