London’s New Year’s Eve fireworks display is the largest annual pyrotechnic show in Europe. The most recent display, which rang in 2026, featured several world-firsts and historic milestones.
2026 Show Highlights
The Scale: The display featured over 12,000 fireworks, 420 lights, and 40,000 total effects stretching across four miles of buildings and barges.
Holographic Tech: The 2025–26 show incorporated hologauze animations for the first time, creating 3D-like holographic illusions of British icons and highlights from the past year.
Thematic Tribute: The "Togetherness" theme celebrated major 2025 sporting successes, including England’s victories in the Women’s Euro and Women’s Rugby World Cup, and a special tribute to the film Wicked with pink and green fireworks.
Musical Icons: The 12-minute soundtrack included hits from Raye, Sabrina Carpenter, and Ed Sheeran.
Economic & Logistical Facts
Crowds & Viewers: Approximately 100,000 ticketed spectators attend in person, while over 11 million people watch the live broadcast on BBC One.
Economic Impact: The event costs approximately £2.3 million to £3 million to stage, but it generates an estimated £16 million for London’s local businesses and hospitality on the night.
Infrastructure: Preparing the site requires 16km of barriers, 9km of audio cables for 200 speakers, and a crew of 32 specialist technicians working through the night from December 27.
The London Eye: Each of the 32 capsules on the London Eye serves as a firing position, representing the 32 boroughs of London.
Historical Origins
First Major Show: While London has a long history of fireworks, the modern large-scale annual tradition began in 1999 to celebrate the millennium.
Ticketing: The event was free until 2014, when a £10 ticketing fee was introduced due to safety concerns over overwhelming crowds.
Royal Tradition: Queen Elizabeth I was such a fan of pyrotechnics that she created the official title of "Fire Master of England" to honor the best display makers.
