Chemise a la Reine Faire?! A dress that's historical, fantasy, and more
This 18th Century chemise gown is beautiful, versatile, and full of history. My friend Sara asked me to sew this for her without realizing it was a real 18th Century fashion, but she'll be wearing it to renaissance faires, as a fantasy costume, and as a comfortable modern summer dress! This gown was made popular by Marie Antoinette, but that's only a small part of a much bigger story-- it began as the "robe a la Creole" in the Caribbean. Sadly but unsurprisingly its history is fraught with racism and exploitation, but it would be irresponsible to shy away from confronting the not-so-pretty context of our pretty historical dresses.
