Afghanistan: UK troops help crowds at Kabul airport

British soldiers helping British citizens fleeing from Kabul airport on Friday were met with large crowds of people also attempting to leave Afghanistan following the Taliban's takeover of the capital.

Partly working alongside the Taliban, U.K. troops assisted British citizens and those who had worked for them throughout the conflict in Afghanistan in boarding planes to the U.K.

The British soldiers' activities come as U.K. Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab resisted calls to resign, after he allegedly refused to interrupt his holiday on the Greek island of Crete to make a call to help translators flee Afghanistan.

Raab allegedly did not call his Afghan counterpart Hanif Atmar on Friday after officials suggested he “urgently” do so in order to arrange help for those who supported British troops.

Two days later, the Taliban captured Kabul and Raab cut short his holiday and traveled back to the U.K. to deal with the crisis.

The Taliban swept into Afghanistan's capital Sunday after the government collapsed and the embattled president joined an exodus of his fellow citizens and foreigners, signaling the end of a costly two-decade U.S. campaign to remake the country.
