Okay so here’s our two cents about all the African / diasporic mythology, spirituality and cultural references that we found interesting in Sinners! 🌍🦇
We don’t think we’ve mentioned anything official from Ryan Coogler here, but after watching this movie twice (because once wasn’t enough!), we’ve spotted some incredible connections to African spirituality, mythology, and culture 💛
And we’re creating a pdf on our patreon packed with all the information we couldn’t put in the 3 min video. Comment Patreon to get a link & be the first to be notified when it’s done! ✨
🚨 Spoilers ahead, you’ve been warned!
Here’s some more references we couldn’t fit in the video:
When Remmick scratches Sammie, the marks he makes look very similar to the **Abaja** tribal marks from the Yoruba people. These marks symbolise identity and belonging.
We also loved this quote from Delta Slim to Sammie: “The blues wasn’t forced on us like that religion was.” Music has always been our language of survival, resistance, and spirituality, and calling it the devils music was a form of cultural erasure.
Have you spotted any other references? We’d love to know your input!
And if you haven’t watched #sinners yet... seriously, what are you waiting for? 👀
