Lonnie Holley was born in 1950, one of 27 children in Birmingham, Alabama. The story goes he was traded for a bottle of whisky as an infant, lived on carnival showgrounds, and was confined as a teenager in the Alabama Industrial School for Negro Children - a place of notorious cruelty. He found his way out through art, and spoke to ABC 7.30's Sarah Ferguson while he was on tour in Australia.
