In world news and current events today, this display can create
an interactive 3D image similar to the communication hologram in 'Star Wars.' The resulting image is visible from any angle.

Sriram Subramanian, Project Leader, Professor of Informatics, Univ. of Sussex: The idea is that we use sound to hold a particle in midair and we move this particle really, really fast, until you have persistence of vision and then you can see that it’s an object in front of you.

The system is called the Multimodal Acoustic Trap Display (MATD). It was created by researchers from the University of Sussex. MATD is made up of 512 speakers that emit sound in the ultrasonic range, which humans can’t hear.

Sriram Subramanian, Project Leader, Professor of Informatics, Univ. of Sussex: It's the time difference between each adjacent speaker that generates what we call a trap that holds the particle in place. And then we update that position of the trap, so the bead moves with it. So it's only the time difference between the different speakers that is responsible for creating that 3D content.
