New United States Department of Homeland Security regulations will soon require all non-citizens, including Canadians, to be photographed upon entering and exiting the U.S. This enhanced biometric data collection, utilizing facial recognition technology, aims to bolster identity verification, combat visa overstays, and reduce passport fraud. The initiative stems from a mandate to create an integrated biometric entry and exit system, referencing national security concerns and international calls for improved traveler identification. While already in place for some non-citizens since 2004, these new rules represent a significant expansion, applying to all non-citizens, including minors and seniors, previously exempt from certain biometric screenings. The U.S. Customs and Border Protection is still addressing technical challenges for implementation at land borders and for pedestrians. This move, despite widespread public privacy concerns, is set to take effect December 26th, with a further public comment period to follow the regulation's publication.
