The HMS Surprise is an exact replica of an 18th Century Royal Navy frigate, originally called HMS Rose. After the ship was used for the Academy award winning movie, "Master and Commander: the Far Side of the World" (2003 with Russel Crowe), it was given to the San Diego Maritime Museum.

This clip shows the three mast vessel, with royal sails drawn, on the open ocean outside of San Diego bay, in November 2008. (The royal sails are the two top positioned sails which are only set when the breeze is very light.)
The HMS Surprise had been maintained in sea-worthy condition by the SD Maritime Museum.
