TABLE OF CONTENTS
0:00 - Intro
1:38 - CHORDS & SWITCHING
4:05 - CHORD PRACTICE (PLAY-ALONG)
5:39 - TINY BIT OF EAR TRAINING
6:30 - STRUMMING & RHYTHM
9:57 - PUTTING IT TOGETHER (PLAY-ALONG)
We begin with the chord shapes. We practice going from G to C and from G to D. We also talk about how to place your thumb on the back of the neck and the overall principles for playing chord shapes accurately. I also share with you some tips and tricks for making it a smoother process. After that we practice the chords in order, using downstrokes only and counting aloud.
Before moving on to learn the strumming pattern, we also take a moment to talk about the chord order and looking for little patterns within. We also take a second to discuss a little bit of ear training, just the most basic stuff, listening for tension and release - that's where it all starts!
This song is in 3/4 time. Usually, songs are in 4/4 (we count to four). But in this song, we're counting to three, over and over again, so our strumming pattern has to fit within three beats. We break it down, and then we change it ever so slightly, getting rid of the third downstroke. This gives us a miss, creates a syncopated strumming pattern syncopation is just an offbeat rhythm. We change it yet again, adding a root strum on beat three. This is the most challenging of the three, but I find it feels the best. It's what I prefer to use myself, but you can use any of the three levels of this strumming pattern. Once we've chosen our strumming pattern. We can use it with the chord shapes, and that'll give us the tune.
We practice it together, nice and slow, and that's all there is to it!
Take care, see you next time!
