Thanks for watching the video The Beginner's Guide's Psychological Lessons | Screen Therapy!

It's been a while since it came out, but, years later, I still thought this game deserved a review based on its emotional intelligence and potential as a tool for psychological growth.

The Beginner's Guide was an emotional and psychological fun-house maze that many of us have tried to pick apart (Who's Coda? Do they exist? Is this really Davey Wreden's feelings or is it a character? Is any of this real? What happened to Coda and Wreden at the end? etc. etc. etc.) but this essay is about the one person we tend to forget in our analyses: the player. The Beginner's Guide is a guide for how to overstep bounds, analyze others, and lose track of ourselves - but we can use it mindfully to do the exact opposite: to learn more about ourselves through our analyses of others and grow closer to the scarier (and scared) parts of ourselves.

Video games like The Beginner's Guide can be good for our mental health when we play mindfully and intentionally. This game offers us an education in self-compassion and emotional intelligence, the trick is learning to treat games more seriously.
